This article describes how to update your domains nameservers to point to a different host provider. These instructions are generic, but each domain provider steps are similar.

Updating nameservers is a common step when pointing your domain to a new hosting provider or DNS service. While the exact interface differs across registrars (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains, etc.), the overall process is similar.
Log in to Your Registrar Account #
- Go to your domain registrar’s website.
- Sign in using the credentials associated with your domain.
Step 2: Locate Domain Management #
- Find the Domains or My Domains section in your account dashboard.
- Select the domain name you want to update.
Access DNS or Nameserver Settings #
- Look for options like DNS Management, Manage Nameservers, or Advanced Settings.
- In some registrars, this may be under Domain Settings or Additional Settings.
Step 4: Replace Nameservers #
- You’ll see your current nameservers (often the registrar’s default).
- Choose the option to use custom nameservers.
- Enter the new nameserver values provided by your hosting or DNS provider.
- Example format:
ns1.example.comns2.example.com
- Example format:
Step 5: Save Changes #
- Click Save or Apply Changes.
- Confirm any prompts asking if you’re sure about the update.
Step 6: Wait for Propagation #
- DNS changes don’t take effect immediately.
- Updates may take anywhere from a few minutes up to 24–48 hours to fully propagate across the internet.
NOTE: Ensure you have at least two nameservers (primary & secondary). Double-check the spelling because a typo can make your domain unreachable.
